Quintessential Thought

Have you ever carefully crafted and communicated a goal, only to have someone challenge or question it? This can be very frustrating, even discouraging.

Consider the good news: the reaction usually means they’re thinking about it, considering the implications. Good job!

Often, this situation can happen when someone gains clarity on the goal and grapples with the difference between their expectations or the norm. There’s also a possibility that this person has a perspective you need so you can steer toward the goal or choose to adjust it. Or, they need to figure out their own commitment to the goal.

Regardless, if you approach the response with curiosity, you can learn a lot and make a strong, effective decision about your goal.

“The path of least resistance is the path of the loser.” - H. G. Wells

“Change means resistance, and resistance means transformation and igniting energies.” - Yasmine Hamdan

“To fly we have to have resistance.” - Maya Lin

Quick Step

Next time you encounter resistance to a goal, take a deep breath and find a curiosity question to ask so you can learn more. If you’re stuck, a simple prompt to start with is, “Help me understand - can you tell me more?”

Question

What resistance and challenges from the past could you have paid more attention to?
