Quintessential Thought

Today, we’re wrapping up our series on effective change leadership by unveiling a powerful tool: The Change Hypothesis.

The Change Hypothesis is a simple template to analyze different perspectives on the change and articulate your vision clearly and concisely.

Here’s the template:
We believe that, by [taking these actions],
we will [achieve this desired future state]
and avoid [the current status quo pain points].
We'll observe if that's happening by [reviewing these measures].

Why is it Powerful?

  • Adaptability: Viewing change as a hypothesis allows for flexibility. Be open to new ideas and adjust your approach as needed.

  • Activate: Clear action steps encourage others to participate in making the change happen.

  • Shared Vision: Describing the desired future state and the pain of the status quo paints a clear picture of what success looks like, motivating others to engage.

  • Empowerment: Defining success measures sets clear boundaries, allowing your team ownership over achieving the goals.

We hope you’ve found helpful, actionable ideas in our series on change!

Quotes

“The only relevant test of the validity of a hypothesis is comparison of prediction with experience.” - Milton Friedman

“There are two possible outcomes: if the result confirms the hypothesis, then you've made a measurement. If the result is contrary to the hypothesis, then you've made a discovery.” - Enrico Fermi

“Few things are more important during a change event than communication from leaders who can paint a clear and confidence-inspiring vision of the future.” - Sarah Clayton
